Working Lace…

In case you haven’t noticed…I wear a lot of what some would call “formal” clothes to work or just out everyday. I find that anything can be paired with denim….so a denim shirt with a fancy skirt or a formal blouse with denim jeans is an easy go to look.

Today’s outfit pairs a light acid washed denim shirt I bought at Belk.  I LOVE the detailing on this shirt!  The denim is soft and the little gemstones do not snag or bother while wearing.  Plus, this shirt is identical to a JCREW Chambray Shirt (which is sold out) not to mention much, much cheaper.

Check it out here at Belk!

Other aspects of this look include a silver lace skirt (Ann Taylor old but LOVE this one by JCREW), a Kate Spade bag (similar here), Chloe+Isobel Statement Necklace (buy it here), heels (BCBG Generation old but love these)!  Other items: sunglasses-Franco Sarto, Watch – Kate Spade, Bracelet – JCREW.

These Shoes…

So….I found these shoes…and…

it is extremely difficult not to wear them…everyday.

And they don’t even look like something I’d wear!  How is it that my fashion sense can completely surprise me so absolutely?!

Maybe it’s because its Fashion Week in NYC.  Yep…I bet that’s it.  It’s Fashion Week.

It’s making me break out of my usual look and embrace new and different styles.  I guess that’s a good thing.

Now to plan an outfit that does not consist of these shoes….hmmmm….

Feeling the Fall…

It’s New York Fashion Week…and I’m not there.  Yes…I’m wallowing in my self pity.  Yes….I will continue to live vicariously through the lives of those lucky enough to actually BE in NY.  and Yes…I will continue to whine about it.

In the meantime…I’m working on my fall transitioning.  This is actually my first fall transition while blogging as I started the blog last November and it’s proving to be a lot of work!

First there’s the issue that our Southern weather doesn’t realize it’s fall transition time.  My hopes of fall like landscapes on September 2nd did not materialize.  This translates into my sweaters, cardigans and boots being juxtaposed against a sea of people sporting flip flops, tank tops and Victoria’s Secret “Angel” shorts (gasp).

No matter..I shall soldier on until everyone else catches up….or at least bundles up!  Yep.  That’s me…always ahead of the trend and all.  And wearing boots when it’s 90+ degrees outside!

Another surprising hardship of fall transitioning is deciding which clothes are still applicable versus those that definitely need to go to my Spring/Summer closet.  This has resulted in a clothing tornado in my closet, bedroom and bathroom and is threatening to take out my other bedrooms as well.  I will (said with determination) conquer this issue this weekend but for now…it’s driving me crazy!

Well..enough of my transition woes.  In the words of the late, great Joan Rivers…who am I wearing?!

Today’s dress is from last season’s line at Ann Taylor LOFT.  You can find a very similar dress at The LIMITED and I’m verrrrry tempted to buy a couple of those – one in red and one in yellow.  If I hadn’t blown a few hundred today at JCREW and Boden , I’d be purchasing them right now…but I digress.  If you do like the look, check out these at The LIMITED here.

The boots I’m wearing are by Nine West and I must admit I love this brand!  If you’re looking for durable but chic and trendy (and affordable) boots for the winter, look no further as Nine West has a fab. u. lous collection.  Check it out here!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

School Days

School days, School days…good old golden rule days…

As I pack away my beautiful summer dresses, sandals and outfits, I try to console myself with the knowledge that this isn’t goodbye but rather a brief parting.  I’m not quite ready to pack away all of these things and will be transitioning some of them thru fall until the leaves are all fallen from the trees and the cold winds blow through.  Sigh…

But then it’s tights season and I get REALLY happy about tights season!

Part of my fall transitioning is unpacking all of my sweaters and heavy blouses to pair with lighter skirts and slacks.  Today’s look was inspired by the “School Chic” trend that I’ve noticed is popping up.

I’m of the opinion that embroidered or monogrammed blazers and sweaters never go out of style and I do love the preppy school girl look (even if it’s been quite some time since I was a school girl).  I was terribly lucky to borrow this cute cardigan from my sweet daughter who is, currently, just that…a school girl.  Lucky girly wears a uniform complete with plaid skirt, embroidered blouse and penny loafers every day!

Even if you’re a school girl no longer, why not try an embroidered cardigan or blazer?  It adds a bit of formality to an outfit and adds a bit of sophistication and personalization as well!

Land’s End sells wonderful cardigans and blazers and also embroiders them with your favorite school’s logo or a monogram of your choosing.  The cardigan I’m wearing in the picture is from Land’s End so I can attest to their quality and comfort. Click here to check it out!

Oh and just a note about the wonderful mural behind me in these shots.  The mural was painted by a local artist, Shannon Lake…with a link to his website:  He is a wonderful, local artist and I’m so lucky to see his work throughout some of the Southern towns I travel.

Transitioning to Fall…texture, color and layering…

With Fall quickly approaching and the weather temperatures fluctuating it is quite the chore to dress appropriately.  I typically find myself freezing and as I work in an office, jackets and sweaters are a must.

Today’s outfit is one of my most versatile.  I’ve worn this combo during the winter with taupe tights and boots as well as during this past Summer by losing the jacket and adding cute wedges.

I love the layering and dimension of this outfit.  There is a lot going on but with muted colors, you can amp up the patterns and make the look more interesting.  Don’t be afraid to mix and match similar colors and textures!

The jacket and skirt from this post are both by Simply Very, by Very Wang @Kohls.  It’s a great brand…with lots of beautiful textures and colors.  Check it out here!

Oh!  And one more thing…my family and I are heading to the beach this fine Labor Day weekend for one last Summer hurrah!  There will be more blog posts next week but check me out on Instagram or Twitter @Cortneybreblog also as I’ll be updating those daily!

A Little Party Never Hurt Nobody

Today’s post takes it rhythmic title from one of my favorite reads, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. I initially became enamored with Fitzgerald upon reading ahead in my Literature book during my Sophomore year in high school. It was tenth grade, the parties were non-existent, the pace was dreadfully slow, the shows boring, the buildings shorter, the moral was looser and the liquor was…well it was 10th grade! What liquor?!

During this time, my young, nerdy and not quite so fashionable self found small town life colorless and sought solace via her only escape…reading. Therefore, when this younger self stumbled upon Bernice Bobs Her Hair, a short story by Fitzgerald, she couldn’t pull herself away.

More short stories followed…The Ice Palace, The Offshore Pirate, A Diamond as Big as the Ritz. I then read, The Great Gatsby. I will admit…I didn’t love it as much as I did the short stories. The novellas provided glitz and glamour and told of freshly pressed love stories and first loves. The Great Gatsby was a much darker tale and one my 10th grade self couldn’t quite understand. Over the years, I’ve re-read Mr. Fitzgerald’s work as well as poured over tellings of his and Zelda’s tragic but glamorously exciting life. I’ve come to understand The Great Gatsby quite a bit more and my appreciation of it’s tale has deepened.

When the movie directed by Baz Luhrmann, debuted last year, I was quite skeptical of its ability to live up to the grand story I kept captured in my mind. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the film and quite enjoyed it.

Oh my…this has turned from a fashion post to a “my love of reading” one.   Alas…I’ve digressed from my original intent to write about today’s party dress you see before you.

Really though…I must ask you…how can you wear a party dress without thinking of the grandest of parties during the most glamorous of days…when “too much of anything was bad but too much Champagne was just right”?!

And now a little about the dress I’m wearing.

I found this beauty at JCREW –heavily discounted and needing a friend.  (buy it here)

A little “love at first sight” occurred and the dress was mine.

The task of dressing it down for work was not an easy one.  I do think this jacket is a nice accompaniment to it though and sets off the dress nicely.

So, the next time you’re wondering what to wear…why not pull that old bridesmaid or formal dress from it’s dormant hanger and add a little party to your day!

Stripes and a POP of Red…

Happy Friday, peeps!  I must admit today’s post is one of my favorites.  I recently purchased this linen dress from JCREW’s last mega sale and I’m in love with it.  Add a pair of red shoes and it just wears itself!

If you need, want, must have the dress…check it out here!

Have a great weekend!  Xoxo…
